The boat Specs:

The boat was designed by Ray Richards.   Mr. Richards also designed the boat that we grew up on, the Ranger 20, built in Kent, Washington.  It's interesting that the Ranger was the first place that Mr. Richards used the round settee, but we all admit that on the Offshore 41 it's a lot more comfortable!  It seems homier to sit at the round table for those of us who grew up on the Ranger.  It also seems like another good reason for the name of the boat!

Pete Senior has owned two Ranger 20's, but the one we'll always remember is Gust Rider, hull #6, on which we, and tons of other people, learned to sail.  We've raced against the #1 boat of Ken Wheeler's lots of times!   In fact, Ken Wheeler taught Big Pete to sail.   We've found that Ray Richards designs are practical and bombproof.  The Ranger 20 certainly was... unlike the Ranger, though, this one is sinkable!

Niceties/ Other stuff

Sleeping arrangements

The boat sleeps eight people; two on other sides in the in the rear bunks, two in front, and two in the forward berths, and maybe two, three, (or more) in the "table-to AUSTIN POWERS round berth" in the dining area.

Easy to handle Shorthanded

The boat has roller-furling, self-tailing winches, and has hydraulic wheel steering.  The instruments are visible through the open hatch, and it also has an autopilot that slaves to a compass course, with a tethered remote.  Eventually, the boat will be fitted with GPS and nav software.

The boat was owned and maintained by an gee-whizkid engineer who unfortunately died in a plane accident, when his stunt plane crashed north of Seattle.

Food Stuff

The boat is equipped with freezer/ refridgerator, head/ shower, propane hot water and propane BBQ.

Go Fast Stuff

The boat has been retrofitted with a huge symmetrical chute and spinnaker pole that gybes end-for-end. It since has a new assymetrical spinnaker and a maxiprop, which feathers when not driving the boat, adding ~ .7 knots to the boatspeed under sail.  The blades also flip over when driving into reverse, so the blades cut as much in reverse as forward.  This is a huge improvement over the knockoff Cheoy Lee 41, where the prop is behind the keel... who thought of that?  Anyway, the boat has a ton more stopping power now.   The boat has new antifouling paint as of Spring 2008.
